“A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle”- Irina Dunn
Here at Blushing Boutique, we decided to honor the spirit of Ms Dunn’s immortal words with our own twist on a Valentine’s party and celebrate our female fabulousness. If we do say so ourselves, our ‘Who Needs a Man’ party on February 10th was a smashing success.
Our incredible line up of special guests along with our smashing sale of gorgeous fashions kept us hopping all evening long.We had our peepers polished with gorgeous lashes from the stunning ladies at Wink Lash Lounge, indulged in some too-good-to-diet chocolate covered strawberries, and were titillated by the naughty yet nice wares that Hanky Panky had to offer. Also, many of us left with some pretty fabulous dresses!
We also enjoyed a fun yet thought provoking talk by Suzanne Fetting, founder of Absolute Confidence and Coaching.Suzanne told us that as women, it is important that we love ourselves for who we are and don’t surrender to societal pressures to compare ourselves to other women.Being real is more important than anything else. She suggested that we all go home and write down a list of 10 things we love about ourselves, something most women have a hard time doing. It was a very interesting exercise, and one we highly recommend. In fact, here is a list of the 10 things we love about the fun and fabulous women we see in our store everyday:
1)How beautiful you look in Blushing – you make our job easy!
2)Your insistence on getting your friends to realize how beautiful they are.
3)That you represent women of style and substance.
4)That you care about locally made products..
6)You want to share our boutique with all your friends.
7)Your fun loving attitudes.
8)How friendly you are.
9)Your excitement for each new season designs.
10)You inspire us to keep creating.
Thank you so much for everything that you are and we can’t wait to see you again!
Blushing's Holiday Glamour Party 2011
It’s that time of year, the holidays are creeping closer and while this season may bring stress – dressing for parties, buying and wrapping, or finding accessories to update that little black dress - at least now we know Blushing Boutique can solve all of these problems.
Blushing Boutique hosted a fantastic “Get Ready for the Holidays’ event last Wednesday,November 16th and judging from the amount of wine left over, a good time was had by all.We want to thank everyone who braved the dark and stormy night to come kick off the holiday season with us.We all had a wonderful time trying on party dresses and shopping for something shiny from Earth Essence jewelry. We received expert advice in the hair and makeup department and learned how to look after our skin and be kind to the planet as Arbonne make-up artist, Marina demonstrated the sultry holiday lip and glamorous eye. Thanks to Jessica and Nicole from Opus Hair Salon for showing us all how to be flawlessly coiffed for that last minute holiday party with quick yet stunning updos. We learned how to create that ‘Old Hollywood Look’ and how to set rollers properly to eliminate those annoying hairline kinks and how to place bobby pins properly (criss cross them!) to actually keep your faux bobs and buns in place. A big thank you to our beautiful models, Amanda and Frances for whom flawlessness is practically an art form.We hope you all had a great time and for those who couldn’t make it, we hope to see you soon.Happy Holidays everyone, may your winter season be filled with fun, friends and fashion!
Thank you Dan Poh for all of the wonderful photos!

Shelley Klassen - Spring 2011
Something’s happening; it feels like we have entered a new era of freedom and we don’t know what’s going to happen next. No longer the interested spectator, we have become author, actor, part of the performance. Social media is our vice and gives us back our spontaneity, allowing our surrealist dreams and fantasies to surface. We add a zest of rebellion and lots of intensity to dive headlong into a season that we want to declare joyful and free.
Wild nature plays all its cards this season, calling on Milton to lure us into a game of paradise lost with all its misleading tricks of rambling floral patterns. Pretty vines of leaf encircle us and giant, exuberant flowers devour us. Goddess’ reign and lure us from above in dancing chiffons with bursts of spectacular color and intriguing intensity.
The energy is familiar yet unknown. The message is clear as the full spectrum of reds from purple to salmon pink, sing at the top of their voices. Incandescent and inky blues extend into uninhibited aqua greens. Our story ends with a stormy summer’s day, bright and magnetic lightening, and the horizon plunging into the ocean.
For Spring 2011, Shelley’s silhouettes show all the right parts to keep that special someone interested at all times while charming the crowd. With spaghetti straps and strapless neck lines Shelley actually goes to the hem for subtle detailing to give just the right amount of leg.
If frugality is the name of the game in this day and age, versatility is how you play it and Shelley gives us completely reversible dresses as well as necklines that can convert to strapless by removing the seamless button down spaghetti straps. The ensemble, as always feminine, with a brush of colour and a splash confidence this is for the woman who knows what she wants and how to get it. You go girl!
Come and let your girly girl out at Blushing Boutique, located at 579 Richards St., downtown Vancouver, BC.
Shelley Klassen, Spring 2011.
As the holidays approach, the search is on for a perfect holiday dress that will separate you from the rest of the crowd. To help you out, we have collected some of the major trends for the holiday season, and where to find them (at Blushing of course!)
You can’t go wrong with a little black dress this holiday season. Known for its timelessness and class, the LBD is the perfect dress for those last minute holiday parties and Blushing Boutique has a little black dress to suit all types of women. They range from more casual styles like the sweater dress with ties on the hem and sleeves ($158) which is the perfect dress for a get together with close friends and also very versatile, to more dressy styles like the black sequin party dress ($285) which is more suitable for a cocktail event. For a formal event, you might consider a long, classic, black gown like the one shown below ($398). This gown is backless and looks great on a wide variety of women.
If you’re not feeling the LBD, another option is the holiday staple; sparkle. The holidays and sparkly sequins seem to go hand in hand, and sequins are a huge trend this holiday season. If you want to shine and sparkle at your holiday event, then Blushing has the perfect dress for you. The beautiful backless, gold sequin dress ($248) is perfect for a holiday party dress. The subtle shimmer of the sequins will make sure that all eyes are on you when you walk into the room. The teardrop sequin halter dress ($248) is a spectacular choice as well for your event. If you’re looking for pure fun in a dress, then the rainbow party dress is your dress ($233) with its sense of cheer and its sparkle.
Story of a Girl fashion Show October 2010
A big thank you to everyone who came out and made our fashion show “Story of a Girl” a huge success! It wouldn’t have been half as amazing without all our loyal fans and customers. It was a night filled with fashion, music and art. Thanks to all our wonderful vendors, Jazz Baby, and Monika Bilchar for keeping the crowd entertained while they waited for the show. The show itself featured our in-house designer Shelley Klassen, Nadine Chong, Malene Grotrian and Bridget Bergman. Other lines that were featured were Bionic by Mark Foreman and Dish Denim.
February11th, 2010 The Olympics are finally here. Yahoo…Go World Go!!
Vancouver, Blushing Boutique;
So we finally have a chance to show the entire World what an amazing place we are fortunate enough to live in. This is a once in a life time experience for those of us in Vancouver to experience the Olympics in our backyards and to have the opportunity to host the World at such a huge event. For the athletes, this is everything they have prepared their lives for. It culminates into a few seconds, or minutes, or hours and then its over. What a memory, an experience, what a dream it must be to compete at this level. So from the entire staff at Blushing Boutique and Blushing Designs, we wish all of the athletes the best in their competitions and of course we wish the Canadian Olympic Team the very best of luck as they go for gold. As a result I was inspired to create the CANADA dress you see here in the window. Go Canada Go!!

Back to Cool & Classic. . .
As we take it back to cool September, you feel invigorated after a fantastic summer full of good times and good weather. Designer, Shelley Klassen, from her eponymous label Shelley Klassen and Blushing Designs recommends you keep it sophisticated with cooler colours like teal, mulberry and black. Your wardrobe should be versatile and flexible. Shelley also recommends in this economic climate you look at some investment pieces that are classic in their tone, meaning colour and silhouette and timeless for years to come. You don’t necessarily want to jump on every season’s new trend as you may be out of style before the season is even over.
Klassen likes to keep it classic in her designs and only touches on trends with her silhouettes and her vibrant selection of colours. For fall 2009, Klassen is addressing the mid-transitional fall season with vibrant tones of deep blues, fuchsia as well as rich greens and purples which take form in a variety of stunning designs including A-symmetrical single shoulder dresses, bow neck halters and strapless party dresses with figure hugging bodices and full skirts.
Klassen also has her take on executive style with a 1940’s wide neck, delicately curved lapel jackets paired with a slim fitting skirt with a subtle ruffled hem in sparkling tweeds and other richly textured fall fabrics. Her colours for fall suiting are in classic black pinstripe, olive and coco brown. All of Klassen’s garments are locally designed and locally made and available at Blushing Boutique and across Canada in select boutiques.

Stay Chic while you beat the heat!
August is upon us and although this means that summer will soon come to an end, the good mother earth has brought us some serious heat for mid summer, at least for Vancouver. At Blushing Boutique, designer Shelley Klassen for Blushing Designs and her eponymous label, Shelley Klassen, is addressing the mid-transitional season moving towards her fall collection. Vibrant tones of deep blues, fuchsia as well as rich greens and purples take form in a variety of stunning designs including single shoulder dresses, bow neck halters and strapless party dresses with figure hugging bodices and full skirts. But before we go there it looks like we’re all going to have to beat the heat and some how stay chic but cool.
Klassen recommends that there’s nothing more comfortable in this kind of heat than natural fibers such as cotton, silk and bamboo. Dresses, blouses, skirts and even maxi dresses made of these fibers will keep the body cool by allowing your perspiration to leave your body, be absorbed by the fabric and evaporate. Looking chic and staying cool can be a little tricky in 35 degree temperatures but with the right fabric and style you can beat the heat and be comfortable.
It’s also that time of year for fabulous garden parties and BBQ’s. To take advantage of this fantastic summer evening weather, Klassen suggests a dress is an easy fashion pick for those warm nights! Blushing Boutique, Klassen’s flag ship store, has some amazing late summer pieces perfect for these occasions! And with everyone trying to fit in their last minute parties before the summer is over, keep it cool and fresh and charm your guests in a dazzling dress!

Confidence Close - Up with Shelley Klassen (Designer!)
Years in Business: 10 years wholesale, 2.5 years retail
What motivated you to start your business? I had a passion to design and make beautiful clothing.
What do you love most about it? The creative process of playing with fabric and the end result of making women happy.
Least? The logistics, endless detailed paperwork to ensure proper production and manufacturing.
How did having confidence in yourself and your business idea play a role in starting your business? You have to believe in yourself to move toward your dreams. Know that anything is possible if you dare to dream it and the only person propelling you in that direction or getting in the way, is you. I believe in the Law of Attraction and if you focus on negative things about yourself or anything in your life, nothing good will come of it. If you have faith in yourself and focus on the good, good things will come your way. You are the creator of your own destiny.
What do you do to keep yourself motivated? I surround myself with positive people. I meditate and spend quality time with my young son and husband. I appreciate the good things in my life and draw inspiration from them.
What 1 really important thing you've learned along the way? Realize there is always a solution to every problem. Don't get too down when things get stressful. Persevere and know that it will get better and you will survive it. Stay organized and follow a detailed business plan.
What would you recommend to any women that might be thinking about starting their own business? Spend time imagining what it would be like doing what you love. Imagine it being stimulating, successful and rewarding. Believe in yourself first and foremost. Know that you have it in you to do it and go for it!
