The Olympics are finally here.  Yahoo…Go World Go!!

Vancouver, Blushing Boutique;

So we finally have a chance to show the entire World what an amazing place we are fortunate enough to live in.  This is a once in a life time experience for those of us in Vancouver to experience the Olympics in our backyards and to have the opportunity to host the World at such a huge event.  For the athletes, this is everything they have prepared their lives for.  It culminates into a few seconds, or minutes, or hours and then its over.  What a memory, an experience, what a dream it must be to compete at this level.  So from the entire staff at Blushing Boutique and Blushing Designs, we wish all of the athletes the best in their competitions and of course we wish the Canadian Olympic Team the very best of luck as they go for gold.  As a result I was inspired to create the CANADA dress you see here in the window.  Go Canada Go!!

Blushing Designs & Shelley Klassen Spring 2010

The Spring 2010 dress collection is full of color and vitality.  When designing it, I was inspired by the vibrant beauty of the wild flowers in my garden through the summer.  The collection twinkles with subtle detail which has a feminine essence embracing soft ruffles, flounces and draping. Imagine evenings of sweet enchantment with flowing chiffons, vintage laces and satins with crinoline. As always we have designers on hand to accommodate your specific fit needs. I’m very excited about the new season’s collection and I am happy to provide you with all that Blushing has to offer!

Chip & Pepper pop up at Blushing Boutique...

Happy New Year!
Los Angeles based designers, Canadian natives and twin brothers, Chip and Pepper Foster, have set up a pop-up shop here at Blushing Boutique, 579 Richards St (at Dunsmuir). I’m extremely excited to work with Chip and Pepper and I personally know the energy they bring to a venture.  I specialize in women’s clothing, dresses more specifically, so I'm really excited to incorporate a huge denim element into the boutique and offer my current clients a phenomenal denim product as well introduce the boutique to a whole new clientele, including men. Our shoppers will find exclusive items from Chip and Pepper created entirely for Blushing, as well as classic Chip and Pepper favorites. The pop-up shop opened December 10, 2009 to a salvo of television coverage appearing on The National, ET Canada, Breakfast Television, Etalk Canada and Urban Rush.

Back to Cool & Classic. . .

As we take it back to cool September, you feel invigorated after a fantastic summer full of good times and good weather. Designer, Shelley Klassen, from her eponymous label Shelley Klassen and Blushing Designs recommends you keep it sophisticated with cooler colours like teal, mulberry and black.  Your wardrobe should be versatile and flexible.  Shelley also recommends in this economic climate you look at some investment pieces that are classic in their tone, meaning colour and silhouette and timeless for years to come.  You don’t necessarily want to jump on every season’s new trend as you may be out of style before the season is even over.

Klassen likes to keep it classic in her designs and only touches on trends with her silhouettes and her vibrant selection of colours.  For fall 2009, Klassen is addressing the mid-transitional fall season with vibrant tones of deep blues, fuchsia as well as rich greens and purples which take form in a variety of stunning designs including A-symmetrical single shoulder dresses, bow neck halters and strapless party dresses with figure hugging bodices and full skirts.

Klassen also has her take on executive style with a 1940’s wide neck, delicately curved lapel jackets paired with a slim fitting skirt with a subtle ruffled hem in sparkling tweeds and other richly textured fall fabrics.  Her colours for fall suiting are in classic black pinstripe, olive and coco brown.  All of Klassen’s garments are locally designed and locally made and available at Blushing Boutique and across Canada in select boutiques.

Stay Chic while you beat the heat!

August is upon us and although this means that summer will soon come to an end, the good mother earth has brought us some serious heat for mid summer, at least for Vancouver.  At Blushing Boutique, designer Shelley Klassen for Blushing Designs and her eponymous label, Shelley Klassen, is addressing the mid-transitional season moving towards her fall collection. Vibrant tones of deep blues, fuchsia as well as rich greens and purples take form in a variety of stunning designs including single shoulder dresses, bow neck halters and strapless party dresses with figure hugging bodices and full skirts.  But before we go there it looks like we’re all going to have to beat the heat and some how stay chic but cool.

Klassen recommends that there’s nothing more comfortable in this kind of heat than natural fibers such as cotton, silk and bamboo.  Dresses, blouses, skirts and even maxi dresses made of these fibers will keep the body cool by allowing your perspiration to leave your body, be absorbed by the fabric and evaporate. Looking chic and staying cool can be a little tricky in 35 degree temperatures but with the right fabric and style you can beat the heat and be comfortable.

It’s also that time of year for fabulous garden parties and BBQ’s. To take advantage of this fantastic summer evening weather, Klassen suggests a dress is an easy fashion pick for those warm nights! Blushing Boutique, Klassen’s flag ship store, has some amazing late summer pieces perfect for these occasions! And with everyone trying to fit in their last minute parties before the summer is over, keep it cool and fresh and charm your guests in a dazzling dress!

Confidence Close - Up with Shelley Klassen (Designer!)

Years in Business:
10 years wholesale, 2.5 years retail

What motivated you to start your business?
I had a passion to design and make beautiful clothing.

What do you love most about it? The creative process of playing with fabric and the end result of making women happy.

Least?
The logistics, endless detailed paperwork to ensure proper production and manufacturing.

How did having confidence in yourself and your business idea play a role in starting your business?
You have to believe in yourself to move toward your dreams.  Know that anything is possible if you dare to dream it and the only person propelling you in that direction or getting in the way, is you. I believe in the Law of Attraction and if you focus on negative things about yourself or anything in your life, nothing good will come of it. If you have faith in yourself and focus on the good, good things will come your way.  You are the creator of your own destiny.

What do you do to keep yourself motivated?
I surround myself with positive people.  I meditate and spend quality time with my young son and husband. I appreciate the good things in my life and draw inspiration from them.

What 1 really important thing you've learned along the way?
Realize there is always a solution to every problem. Don't get too down when things get stressful. Persevere and know that it will get better and you will survive it. Stay organized and follow a detailed business plan.

What would you recommend to any women that might be thinking about starting their own business?
Spend time imagining what it would be like doing what you love. Imagine it being stimulating, successful and rewarding.  Believe in yourself first and foremost.  Know that you have it in you to do it and go for it!
