Spring has almost arrived. . . |
|
With the weather slowly starting to co-operate with us Vancouverites, I’m feeling the need to update my spring / summer wardrobe. One of the biggest trends this season is the classic white and black combination, not only can you mix and match to get the most out of your wardrobe – but you stay stylish as a “recessionista”! (the girl who keeps stylish in a recession buy mixing and matching, and investing in classic pieces!)
In keeping with this trend my favourites in store right now are the brand new cream cowl neck satin blouse paired with a classic black skirt, the beautiful cream, black and white floral print Audrey dress and the classic black Belinda dress (there's also a matching jacket!) |
|

|
|
All of the pieces shown are available in other fabulous colours! (and will soon be up for sale online!)
To update my look further I think its time for a new hair style from our friends at Legere Salon (Alexandre from Legere Salon also did our fabulous makeover on winner Mari, I'll post pictures soon!). What look is complete without a new do?
Happy Spring!

Comedy Night at Blushing Boutique! |
|
Thanks to everyone who was able to make it out to our first annual comedy night at blushing boutique! Even with medical emergencies (one of the comedians was unable to attend due to a personal medical problem) we managed to have a lot of laughs, nibbles, socializing and of course shopping! The comedians made reference to Sex & the City, how oh so fashionable Vancouver is and of course personal story’s as they stood upon the “stage” (aka the store window!) with on lookers passing by! One of our favourite customers Jacqueline Ryan was in attendance with her daughter Arianna who also got in on the joke telling with two jokes of her own!
Did everyone get as excited as me with all the new blushing spring arrivals? Most of our new spring line is now in store (but there’s still a few treats to come!). We look forward to the next event! See you there … |

Street Cat Designs
...An Interview with Jewellery Designer, Pam Jackson |
|
|
Ayla got the opportunity to sit down with Pam Jackson of Street Cat Designs this past week to learn her inspiring story of how her jewellery became to be!
Ayla: Tell us a little about yourself.
Pam: Well, I’m a mom, first and foremost, and I design jewelry. I was born and raised in BC, but when I was quite young, I moved to Whitehorse, Yukon. I loved it there. Then to Alberta for a bit before I moved back to BC. I love people. Working with people is a passion I’ve been able to realize throughout my life.
|
|
A: Tell us about Street Cat Designs. What a interesting name, what made you think of the name Street Cat Designs?
P: Street Cat Designs is named after my cat, Brutus. He was born and lived on the street till we rescued him after we saw him get hit by a car. I was so lucky to have found him, and obviously, he was lucky to find me. So I figured that if I named my company after him, it would be lucky, too. But “Brutus” wasn’t a great name for a jewelry company, so it became “Street Cat”. Also, I had lived a short time on the streets when I was very young, so it was a tribute to both of our wills to survive.
A: Has designing jewelry always been your passion?
P: Street Cat Designs is the culmination of many years of searching for the perfect outlet for my creativity and passion for beauty.
When I was little I made Barbie clothes and sold them in my grandparent’s business. I gathered all my little friends together and gave them sewing lessons.
Years ago, as a young mother, I sewed beautiful clothes for my daughter. As she grew up and preferred "store bought", I had to find other outlets, so I took up home decor. I did and re did each room in my house, then turned to gardening. There, I delighted in the multitudes of colors and shapes of nature. And now, I am in awe of the colors and qualities of natures "pretty rocks". I am in constant search of the most beautiful of gemstones. I hold onto them and covet them until they tell me what they need to be. And that's how a Street Cat Design comes to be.
And you know what’s crazy, when I was on the street, I used to buy pretty dyed wooden beads and wire and make earrings, which I then sold back to the store. So I guess I’ve come full circle.
A: Did you go to a school to become a jewelry designer?
P: No. But I’d sure like to. Learning is so great. I’ve learned all my techniques from tutorials, books and trial and error. I have a huge bag of half finished, unfinished, mistakes…..but they eventually become something else.
A: What inspires your designs?
P: Oh, gosh, many, many things. Sometimes it’s when the gems and metals get jumbled up on my desk, and just fall together into something beautiful. Or I’ll see a beautiful line in a piece of clothing or a fabric design and need to recreate it into my own interpretation.
A: What type of jewels do you use to create your designs? Do you hand crochet most of your designs?
P: I try to use real gemmy semi precious stones, peridot, amethyst, topaz, sapphire. My pieces are kind of girly-girl, so I try to use beautiful, clear, faceted gems rather than a more organic kind.
A: Tell us about your collection that’s out right now and what we will be seeing in the future for Street Cat Designs?
P: Well, I’m not really sure just yet. I think that with the economy what it is, I have to steer my company onto a route that will allow a majority of people to enjoy a pretty piece of jewelry and feel really special in it without having to spend a month’s grocery money on it.
A: Is there any services that you offer your customers?
P: Oh, lots. I will custom make a piece to your exact needs and preferences. If you see a piece of mine that you would prefer in a different metal, or color of gem, or bigger, or smaller…..whatever. I will strive to do everything I can to make your wishes a reality.
A: Do you have any advice for the future jewelry designers that are out there?
P: Go for it. Use your own creativity to dictate what you make, not the latest trends, because that’s just what they are…..trends. If you develop a style of your very own, YOU will set a trend, right?
Thank you pam!

Happy New Year
... It's Time For Wardrobe Spring Cleaning! |
|
Is your closet so thick that you can’t find a thing to wear?
Can’t find that favourite top and want to pull your hair out in frustration?
It’s time for a spring cleaning!
Although cleaning out your closet seems like a daunting task, the reward of a fresh, well organized wardrobe provides many benefits. Believe me, just looking at a clean closet or shelf or dresser drawer is in itself uplifting and does wonders for your mental wellbeing.
Helpful Tips on Wardrobe Spring Cleaning
Set at least 2 hours aside to get this done. Pull everything out of your closet or dresser drawers and give the surfaces a good cleaning.
Create 3 piles: • Throw away • Donate / Give away • Keepers
Be ruthless. • If you haven’t worn it in years, get rid of it. • If it doesn’t fit, donate it. • If it is well worn, pilling, lost its shape or faded, throw it away. • If your jeans are an outdated wash, toss them. • If the style, fit, colour, print or cut is from another decade, lose it. • If you have 5 black skirts, pick your favorite 2 and make some room in your closet.
Pieces to keep: • Anything that is a classic cut. • Garments that mix and match with multiple pieces. • Clothing that you’ve worn in the past year or at least in the last applicable season. • Staples such as blousing, pants and blazers (as long as the collars and fits aren’t outdated). • Special party/cocktail or formal pieces that are timeless and to die for.
If you are having a hard time deciding on a certain piece, try to create at least 2 or 3 complete outfits with that piece. If it doesn’t go with anything, don’t keep it. Also don’t keep clothing just for sentimental reasons. Be realistic and honestly ask yourself if you will ever wear it again.
Organizing your wardrobe in your closet is a personal preference. You may like to color coordinate your clothing, or separate it into sections of pants, blouses, jackets, dresses. You could have a section for casual wear, business wear and going out wear. Maybe you like to put together ready to wear outfits to make life easier for you. I personally like to keep all tops, blouses, skirts and pants in the center of the closet and anything long like dresses or jackets or heavier pieces such as coats to the sides. This creates some floor space and creates an airier feel to your closet. Figure out a system that works for you.
Also if you are limited in space, keep a trunk of clothing in storage and switch up your wardrobe with each changing season.
When you are done, pour yourself a nice glass of wine and enjoy the fruits of your labour. A well organized, clean closet is refreshing and brings relief and calmness to your home and who knows; maybe you even created a few new outfits you didn’t even know you had!
Enjoy!
